Landing a major customer for its HD voice software, Global IP Solutions said that LG Electronics will use GIPS technology in its fixed-mobile convergence products.
The Korean consumer-electronics giant will integrate GIPS’ VoiceEngine Mobile for HD voice into its FMC application on upcoming handsets. VoiceEngine uses advanced acoustic echo-cancellation technology to improve the quality of voice calls on mobile devices.
Operators continue to push forward with FMC to link mobile voice calling to fixed-line services, so that a single device can switch between networks seamlessly. In an effort to standardize FMC technology, the 3GPP group has released a voice-call continuity spec.
Dual-mode devices from Nokia (NOK), Sony Ericsson, HTC and LG (1577.TWO) support FMC, at least in theory, as does the iPhone.
A specialist in high-definition voice technology, GIPS is also moving rapidly into mobile video. The company says its platform can deliver high-quality real-time video to mobile applications, without the delay, jitter, and echo flaws typically associated with video-over-IP. In February GIPS released a version of its VideoEngine Mobile system optimized for the iPhone.
