Making the first public moves based on its acquisition of AppTrigger in March, Metaswitch Networks said it has added features to its service broker product to ease service providers’ transition to next-generation networks and IMS architectures offering interactive voice, video and messaging services.

The enhancements include baked-in interoperability support, which covers “21 of the major revenue-generating telecom applications,” according to Metaswitch; a service creation environment for XML scripting, which will enable integrators and network managers to easily combine disparate applications; and enhanced SIP compliance, along with other additions.

Adding to its three historic lines of business – VoIP gear, application servers, and protocol stacks – Metaswitch acquired AppTrigger two months ago to move into the rapidly expanding market for service brokers.

"We believe strongly in the service broker market, and that, with our acquisition of AppTrigger earlier this year, we have the best solution for that market bar none,"

said CEO Kevin DeNuccio, in a statement. "This is why we are continuing to invest heavily in the product to maintain our position as innovators and technology leaders in the service broker space."

A software element that sits between the control layer and the service layer of carrier networks, a service broker enables operators to manage services and applications across a range of legacy and next-generation networks and platforms. With its Ignite product, AppTrigger has forged a position as one of the leaders in the service broker market.

Marking another step in the company’s strategy to become a major player in the carrier softswitch and IP applications platforms markets, the AppTrigger acquisition could be a prelude to a Metaswitch IPO either later this year or next.
