Driving its next-gen network architecture deeper into the Tier 2/3 market, Juniper Networks said that regional cable operator Bresnan Communications will consolidate its triple-play offering on Juniper gear including MX480 Universal Edge Routers, running Junos Software, and SRX Series Services Gateways.
A Rocky Mountain operator based in Purchase, New York, Bresnan is the nation’s 13th-largest MSO, serving more than 320,000 customers in Colorado, Montana, Wyoming and Utah. Bresnan's triple play service includes high-definition IP TV, video-on-demand, broadband Internet access, and VoIP.
Faced, as always, with competing against Cisco, the world’s largest networking equipment vendor, Juniper is focusing on next-generation network architectures that enable service providers to offer rich multimedia services.
“Subscribers are demanding new applications and enhanced bandwidth-intensive services, which require a new network architecture optimized to deliver a media-rich experience today and in the future,” said Mike Marcellin, vice president of product marketing at Juniper, in a statement.
Luc Ceuppens, vice president of product marketing for high-end systems at Juniper, elaborated on this strategy in a recent blog post on VON/xchange. “Traditional service providers find themselves caught between declining revenues and the increasing cost of network infrastructure, driving them to explore new network models that transform their infrastructure once again into a profitable business asset,” Ceuppens wrote. “The new model has to evolve the network from simple connectivity pipes to a multifaceted tool capable of delivering diverse applications and services to their customers.”
While cable will continue to command the largest share of the pay-TV market in coming years, IPTV is expected to be the fastest-growing pay-TV platform.
