Reflecting small-company owners’ appetite for low-cost, comprehensive telephony solutions, IP PBX and VoIP provider Fonality said its new-customer revenues doubled in the first half of 2010, compared to the same period a year ago.

Founded in 2004, Fonality offers two versions of its cloud-based IP PBX system, Connect (targeted at home offices and small shops) and Professional/Enterprise, targeted at small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) and larger companies. Fonality Connect provides unlimited domestic and international VoIP calling covering 10 countries, while Professional and Enterprise include an on-site software option for companies that prefer a premises-based communications platform.

Both versions can be upgraded with advanced features like unified messaging, chat, voicemail and e-mail, and can be integrated with standard enterprise software products such as Microsoft Outlook, Google, Salesforce and SugarCRM.

Fonality began life with a variation of Asterisk called PBXtra, which has since evolved into Fonality Professional/Enterprise, and has since been backed by venture funding. In 2007 the company announced a partnership with Dell to provide VoIP to business users of Dell laptops, and last year the company said that it had recorded its 1 billionth call over the cloud.
