Verizon hopes a new marketing campaign will encourage customers to make the switch to online billing. The effort is called the Great Paper Escape sweepstakes. A grand prize of $10,000 will go to one customer who converts to online billing by the end of the year.

Verizon wants to get another 250,000 people signed up for the service. So far, 2.4 million of the telco’s customers get their bills online.

"Earlier this year Verizon launched a comprehensive sustainability program to help our company and our customers reduce their impact on the environment and to conserve energy," said James Gowen, Verizon’s chief sustainability officer. "Through the Great Paper Escape sweepstakes we're offering customers an easy and fun way to reduce their carbon footprints while also providing a faster, more secure and clutter-free way to pay their bills."

Anyone who makes the switch will automatically be entered in the sweepstakes. You’ll get a second entry if you sign up for an automatic payment plan. The odds of winning aren’t really high, however; everyone who already uses the service will be entered as well.

The games don’t stop there. There’s also an opportunity to play a daily instant-win game and be eligible to win prizes ranging from reusable and environmentally friendly tote bags to an energy-efficient washer-dryer combo. Other daily prizes include $50 Verizon Perks gift cards and a Trek Eco Urban bicycle. Existing paperless-billing customers also are eligible for the daily instant-win game.

In 2009, more than 27 million Verizon paper bills were replaced by online bills, and this June alone, Verizon customers made more than 8 million electronic bill payments. Click here to sign up for paperless billing and enter the sweepstakes.
