THE CABLE SHOW — BigBand Networks has introduced an enhanced IP video delivery solution that now supports on-demand programming and back-office connectivity, in addition to linear TV.
Featuring BigBand's vIP PASS integrated with Clearleap's Stream On Demand system, the new solution allows operators to stream entire libraries of managed linear and on-demand video content to IP-connected televisions or devices. This enables operators to bundle and monetize more content to more devices, with more efficient use of bandwidth, BigBand said.
The joint solution takes the bandwidth load off the cable modem termination system (CMTS), making it an efficient path for delivering video-on-demand (VOD) programming or linear TV to IP-connected devices, while also handling back-office operations such as validation, billing, transactions and management of the content catalog. In the process, operators can realize added revenue or reduce churn by offering multi-screen services to the growing array of unmanaged consumer devices such as gaming consoles, iPads, Blue-Ray, mobile devices, PCs and more. The solution addresses operators’ immediate need to support consumers' growing demand for multi-screen video delivery and allows operators to better compete with over-the-top (OTT) services.
“With Clearleap, we have expanded our IP video delivery solution to support on demand services, truly giving the operator the ability to deliver more content anywhere at anytime," said Jay Chambers, VP and chief architect at BigBand Networks. “We believe that the combined Stream On Demand and vIP PASS solution delivers the operational ease and seamless integration that our customers are seeking. This can accelerate the time-to-market with new services and open up a large and growing market opportunity."
BigBand’s vIP PASS supports the Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) approach to help operators "extend" managed video services to subscriber-owned devices in the home network. As it is built upon the existing cable architecture, operators can leverage their investment in BigBand’s Switched Digital Video (SDV) and Universal Edge QAMs, providing a cost-effective video service using a standard DOCSIS 3.0 cable modem or gateway.
Clearleap’s Stream On Demand powers content delivery over IP to connected set-tops, devices, and TVs and enables a user experience competitive with such third-party streaming services as Netflix, Hulu, and AppleTV.
