Taiwan’s largest telco, Chunghwa Telecom, is turning to Alcatel-Lucent for a network upgrade that will tackle an exploding demand for high-bandwidth mobile services in that Asian nation.
Chunghwa’s existing transport network for mobile data is based on a standard designed for voice calls. ALU’s Packet Transport Network solution will increase bandwidth and provide the flexibility needed for advanced mobile data services. When the upgrade is complete, the solution will not only manage the next-generation network through the existing management system but also provide high end-to-end stability and manageability of the next-generation network, ALU said.
“Smart phones, tablets and other Internet-connected mobile devices have caused a huge increase in mobile data traffic in Taiwan," said Ken Wu, president and managing director of Alcatel-Lucent Taiwan. “We have been working closely with Chunghwa Telecom to build an efficient packet transport network which can match that growing demand efficiently."
Alcatel-Lucent says the Packet Transport Network solution will improve performance and help support the future evolution of Chunghwa Telecom’s mobile network. It supports the carrier’s 2G and 3G networks, and the eventual move to 4G LTE. The two companies have already conducted a successful 4G LTE field trial.
