A new content deal between Netflix and Spanish-language broadcaster Telemundo allows Netflix subscribers in Latin America streaming access to 1,200 hours of Telemundo programming per year. Telemundo says the deal will help it examine its viewers’ preferences and make determinations on how to service its audience, Reuters reported.
Netflix, which has seen its stock price tumble by almost a third in the past month, is poised for a major global expansion. The OTT provider said last month that it was planning to expand to 43 countries in Latin America and the Caribbean before the year is out. There’s also talk of taking its services to Spain, the U.K. and perhaps parts of Asia early in 2012.
Netflix has been embroiled in controversy after announcing last month that it was raising the price of its streaming + DVD service in the U.S. from $9.99 to $15.98 per month, effective Sept. 1. Time will tell if traditional service providers or other OTT competitors can capitalize on the churn that will result.
