Google will roll out the latest version of its Android mobile-operating system software in the next couple of months.

At last week’s Dreamforce conference in San Francisco, Google chairman Eric Schmidt said the latest Android (4.0) update – known affectionately as Ice Cream Sandwich – will become available in October or November. (As an aside, those guys must like their sweets: Éclair, Froyo – short for frozen yogurt – Gingerbread, Honeycomb and now Ice Cream Sandwich?) Android 4.0 is said to combine the best of the most recent updates for smartphones and tablets into a cohesive OS.

It’s been widely anticipated that the Samsung Droid Prime will be the first smartphone to run on Ice Cream Sandwich. The Prime is expected to debut on the Verizon Wireless network this fall. In fact, this might be the very reason VzW decided to pass on the much-heralded Samsung Galaxy S II.

The Prime is said to come with a large screen and better screen resolution than you can find on any existing Android phone. It may also come sans buttons – all functions may be on the touchscreen. And the processor could be a monster: possible dual-core, somewhere between 1.2 and 1.5GHz.
