IBC 2011 — In a move to enable service providers and CE manufacturers to deliver a full-featured over-the-top movie and TV entertainment experience, Broadcom and Rovi Corp. are joining forces. The two have integrated Rovi's DivX Plus adaptive streaming solution for digital entertainment content into Broadcom's System-on-a-Chip platforms for set-top boxes and connected digital TVs.
DivX Plus Streaming offers support for 1080p video resolution, subtitles, as well as a range of smooth trick-play capabilities that have historically only been associated with Blu-ray Discs.
"Broadcom's plan to integrate DivX Plus Streaming emphasizes the flexibility of our embedded streaming solution, which is designed for easy implementation on a broad range of platforms," said Corey Ferengul, executive vice president of products at Rovi. "For service providers and consumer electronics manufacturers, DivX Plus Streaming provides a true end-to-end solution for encoding, secure delivery and viewing of streamed video content to connected devices; however, ultimately, it's about enabling them to deliver a better consumer entertainment experience."
DivX Plus Streaming offers smooth resolution scaling to help maintain optimal visual quality as bandwidth fluctuates and helps to provide a buffer-free playback experience. DivX Plus Streaming is based on a flexible DRM framework that is capable of powering a variety of distribution models including electronic sell through, timed rentals or subscription, as well as an array of consumption scenarios such as streaming, downloads, and side-load transfer to enable both online and offline playback.
