YouTube has taken its fight against Netflix and other video providers to the Great White North.
YouTube Movies is now available in Canada. The service charges roughly $4-5 for new and old movie rentals that users can watch online. YouTube Movies launched earlier this year in the U.S. with a relatively modest library of 3,000 titles from which to choose. You get 30 days to start watching a rented film and 48 hours to complete it once you’ve begun.
Like Netflix, the number of new-release options isn’t very big at this point – and Netflix has an advantage of charging just $8 for a monthly streaming subscription. But if you look closely at Netflix Canada and the YouTube Movies service, the Globe and Mail reported, YouTube does have more of Hollywood’s latest films. Google-owned YouTube has signed on with several U.S. production companies and a few studios in Canada.
Competition for your video dollar throughout North America is getting insane. Cablecos, telcos, Apple, Amazon, Hulu, Walmart and many, many more are offering movies and TV shows, whether it be streaming, on demand, or on DVD.
