Genband, a developer of IP infrastructure and application solutions, on Tuesday announced successfully completing what it asserts is the first IPv6 call between a PacketCable specification version 2.0 compatible SIP communications application server and an IPv6 PC2.0 Embedded Digital Voice Adapter.

Frisco, Texas-based Genband completed the call during a CableLabs Interoperability Event in Louisville, Colo. on Sept. 21.

Genband called IPv6 a new Internet Protocol that “solves the issue of address space exhaustion and improves security for real-time communications."

“A successful transition to IPv6 is critical for the cable industry because of the impending expiration of IPv4 capacity," said Alan Breznick, senior analyst at Heavy Reading, in a press release Genband issued. “This achievement is another big step along that path. It also represents a key step forward for PacketCable 2.0. Now we’ll see how quickly cable operators roll out the new equipment meeting both nex-gen standards."
