Netflix Comes to Android Honeycomb Tablets

A new application from Netflix lets owners of Android-based tablet PCs running the Honeycomb version of the operating system watch TV shows and movies downloaded from the over-the-top provider’s website.

Now users of popular tablets like the Motorola Xoom and Samsung Galaxy Tab that operate on Android Honeycomb have access to the service.

“I’m excited to bring Netflix to even more Android devices," wrote Roma De, director of product management, on the company’s official blog. “Netflix members now have even greater flexibility in watching TV episodes and movies wherever and whenever they want."

The overhaul of the Netflix Android app also extends Android support to Canada and Latin America for the first time, making it available on a wide array of tablets and smartphones throughout all regions where Netflix is available. The app can be downloaded from the Android Market.

Up until now, there’s been a lot of confusion as to what Android devices support the Netflix app and which don’t. This should clear much of that up.

So despite recent public-relations faux pas – like a rate hike and failed separation of its DVD and streaming video businesses – Netflix continues to make moves that provide a threat to providers who deliver more traditional video offerings.

Meantime, Netflix stock, which has taken a beating over the past three months, could fall even farther, if you believe some forecasters on Wall Street. Trading at $110 per share on Thursday at 11:45 a.m. ET, that’s down from $300 in mid-July. Caris & Co.’s David Miller says it could drop to $96, according to Forbes. Following a quarter of wild ups and downs – mostly downs – Netflix’s earnings report should be pretty interesting when it’s released on Monday, Oct. 24.
