We’ll know more about the next big update to Google’s Android operating system next week.
An unveiling of Android 4.0 – codenamed Ice Cream Sandwich – scheduled for San Diego last week was postponed out of respect to Apple after the death of Steve Jobs. Now, Samsung and Google have announced they’ve moved the event to Hong Kong and set it for Oct. 19 at 10 a.m. That’s 10 p.m. ET the night before in the U.S., and can be followed live on YouTube.
Ice Cream Sandwich is said to combine the best aspects of the Android smartphone and tablet platforms into one, unified OS – similar to what Apple has done with its iOS.
What remains unknown is exactly what Samsung will introduce at the event, although most signs point to it being the Nexus Prime smartphone, widely anticipated to be the first device to run on the updated Android platform. Specs leaked to BGR last week show the Prime is slated to have a monster display – 4.65 inches – a 1.2GHz processor; 1GB of RAM; 32GB of built-in storage; dual cameras; 1080p HD video capture; and a width of just 9mm.
