4G WORLD — A new study shows operators will need flexible business support systems expressly designed for 4G if hey hope to profit from next-generation services.
The Heavy Reading report “4G Demands Evolution of BSS," sponsored by Convergys, compiles answers from a survey of 75 global providers. It shows they have a lot of different plans for monetizing mobile data and profiting from 4G. Many current BSS solutions, the report says, lack the flexibility and scalability to accommodate diverse operator strategies.
“Yesterday’s BSS platforms, which provide offline batch-oriented rating capabilities, will not be able to handle real-time transactional scenarios that will be presented by 4G’s dynamic business models," said Heavy Reading’s Ari Banerjee, author of the report. “It is time for such monolithic, offline billing platforms to give way to real-time transaction management systems that will not only catalyze the monetization process but also enable communications service providers to roll out innovative business models."
Plans for Monetizing Mobile Data Services
“Mobile operators transitioning to 4G face a perfect storm of challenges," said Morag Lucey, global senior vice president of marketing Convergys. “They must pour money into new infrastructure to meet growing bandwidth demands, continuously launch new products that generate new revenue streams, and perform flawlessly to ensure a superlative experience for customers. In this intense environment, the need for real-time BSS solutions will reign supreme."
