Is Verizon Wireless getting the Samsung Galaxy Nexus or not?

(Editor's Note/Update: Verizon Wireless announced on Oct. 21 that it would carry the Nexus later this year, but did not give a release date.)

Rumors have swelled that the largest U.S. wireless provider would have the rights to sell the first smartphone powered by Google’s new Android 4.0 operating system, dubbed Ice Cream Sandwich.

Samsung didn’t help matters today when a representative of the company reportedly wrote on Samsung Mobile USA’s Facebook page that Verizon Wireless would sell the Galaxy Nexus with the initial release, possibly followed by other U.S. carriers in the future. But confirmation that Verizon Wireless would sell the smartphone was short-lived: “My mistake, no U.S. carrier has been determined yet. Stay tuned for updates," according to a Facebook link that TmoNews included in a story. Adding to the potential confusion is a Galaxy Nexus site that features a sign-up page for consumers to get the latest on the smartphone. One of the drop boxes includes a “Carrier preference," which lists AT&T, Cellular South, Metro PCS, Sprint, T-Mobile, US Cellular and Verizon.

Introduced this week in Hong Kong, the Galaxy Nexus is the first smartphone to incorporate Ice Cream Sandwich, an upgrade to the Android mobile operating system that combines Google's smartphone and tablet platforms into one. Starting next month, the smartphone will be available in the United States, Canada, Europe and Asia.
