Amazon.com has introduced a service for its "Amazon Prime" members that allows them to borrow books for free on their Kindle e-readers.
The company has launched the Kindle Owners' Lending Library, which includes thousands of books including more than 100 current and former New York Times Bestsellers.
Amazon Prime members can borrow one book at a time with no due date, and as with other Kindle books, reader's notes, highlights and bookmarks are saved.
"The Kindle Owners' Lending Library is a great new benefit for Kindle owners and an entirely new growth opportunity for authors and publishers," said Russ Grandinetti, vice president of Kindle content.
Amazon Prime is a membership program that offers free two-day shipping and one-day shipping for $3.99 per item on all eligible purchases for an annual membership fee of $79. Members also have the option to stream over the Web thousands of movies and TV shows. Amazon recently announced an agreement with Disney-ABC, bringing its total content to nearly 13,000 TV shows and movies available for unlimited streaming.
