A new application from AT&T promises to help the carrier's smartphone customers stay in touch with family and friends abroad.

AT&T Call International is a free mobile app designed to offer international long-distance calling at competitive rates. The app was developed with and is operated by business-communications solutions provider 8x8 Inc.

AT&T smartphone customers can use the app to make calls from the U.S. to international numbers; and when abroad, the company says its customers will benefit from the same low rates using the app over Wi-Fi networks.

When you first use the app, you're prompted to establish an AT&T Call International account. Once established, customers can begin making international calls right away, either by dialing directly or by accessing their contacts list. All calls are billed directly to the customer's credit card.

The app is available now as a free download from the Android Market, BlackBerry AppWorld and more. Click here for a list of countries where it can be used and rates.
