Cox Communications plans to stream linear broadband content to tablets, according to a report.
The Atlanta-based cable TV and communications company anticipates doing so by Christmas, Rapid TV News reported, citing Cox President Patrick Esser as saying at SCTE's Cable-Tec Expo 2011 during a session with Motorola Mobility Inc. Chairman and CEO Sanjay Jha.
Cox didn't say which tablets customers could use to gain TV connectivity.
Other cable TV operators to offer services on tablets include Cablevision and Time Warner Cable.
Such offerings could help television companies retain and acquire customers, but at least one research firm – Parks Associates – believes operators will be limited in their ability to grow average revenues per subscriber. In a survey of 8,000 consumers in seven countries, Parks Associates found that one-third of all broadband homes would defect to a provider that offered free TV Everywhere.
