While there's no official word just yet from Verizon Wireless, don't be surprised if you wake up Tuesday morning and discover that the highly anticipated Samsung Galaxy Nexus can be pre-ordered from the nation's largest wireless provider.
The Nexus will be the first handset to run on the latest update to Google's Android operating system, known as Ice Cream Sandwich. Citing "more than a trickle of credible reports," tech site Computerworld is comfortable with putting the word "confirmed" in its headline with regard to a Nov. 29 pre-order date. Dec. 8 continues to be the most forecasted date across the Web for general sales.
The Nexus may be available for much less than what was first anticipated. An Internet advertisement that briefly appeared – probably by mistake – on several websites over the long holiday weekend shows it to be priced at $199, a full $100 less than early reports indicated. The site Android Police says the ads aren't fake because the ads are run by a premium ad network that deals directly with manufacturers and carriers.
Verizon has a lot riding on the Nexus, reportedly passing on the Samsung Galaxy S II earlier this fall in anticipation of carrying the device, which is expected to be an exclusive, at least initially. In addition to running on Ice Cream Sandwich, the Nexus has a large, 4.65-inch display; a pair of cameras; 1GB of RAM; and a dual-core, 1.2GHz processor.
