Verizon Wireless is running a promotion for a limited time that doubles the allowable data on smartphone data plans.

"All new customers who purchase a 4G smartphone are eligible for the double data plans," Verizon Wireless spokeswoman Brenda Raney said in an email.

For instance, if a Verizon Wireless customer signs up for the $30 plan, the customer will receive 4 gigabytes instead of the normal 2 GB.

Raney said customers who have upgraded their service or bought a 4G smartphone within the last 14 days are eligible for the plans.

"Once a customer has the plan, they keep the plan as long as they are on a 4G smartphone," she said. "The limited time promotion applies to how long we will sell the plan, not how long customers get to use the plans."

The promotion is expected to last through the holidays and only covers smartphone plans while excluding mobile broadband plans for USBs and mobile hotspots.

Verizon Wireless currently has nine 4G phones in its portfolio with six available today: Droid Bionic, Droid Charge, LG Revolution, Thunderbolt by HTC, Pantech Breakout and Samsung Stratosphere. The Motorola Droid Razr will be available Friday. Samsung's Galaxy Nexus and the HTC Rezound also will be compatible with Verizon's 4G network, but the nation's largest wireless operator hasn't starting selling those phones. The Rezound will be available on Nov. 14, while the jury is still out on when Verizon will start selling the Galaxy Nexus – the first smartphone to incorporate Google's new Android system, Ice Cream Sandwich.
