Nearly half of the active smartphones in the United States feature Android, Google's mobile operating system.

In a survey of more than 30,000 U.S. mobile subscribers, comScore found that Android ranked as the No. 1 smartphone platform with 46.9 percent market share for the three months ending in November. The market share of Google's immensely popular operating system, which is incorporated in devices carried by Motorola Mobility, Samsung Electronics and other handset manufacturers, inched up 3.1 percentage points from the prior three-month period ending in August.

Apple, the maker of the iPhone, maintained its position as the second most popular smartphone platform with 28.7 percent share, up 1.4 percent point over the previous three-month period, comScore found.

Research in Motion, which has nearly 75 million BlackBerry subscribers around the world, has been growing its overall customer base but continues to lose share in the U.S. smartphone market. The Canadian company controlled 16.6 percent share in the three-month period ending in November, down 3.1 percent from the three months ending in August, according to comScore.
