The Android Market is making some serious gains on Apple's App Store.

Android ecosystem developer Eric Chiu announced in a blog that the Android Market has crossed the 10 billion app download threshold; even more remarkable, users are now downloading 1 billion apps per month. This news comes five months after Apple announced its App Store had broken the 15 billion download mark. Apple better watch its back.

The Android Market is celebrating the milestone by offering some apps every day – for the next 10 days – for just 10 cents.

More and more smartphone and tablet users are flocking to the Android Market as new devices become available from numerous manufacturers; by comparison, Apple only releases an updated version of its iPhone and iPad once every year. Nonetheless, some pretty staggering numbers.

In terms of the number of apps available, many estimates now put Android in the lead there as well. But analysts say in comparison, Apple is raking in the revenue, as its store has many more paid apps than does the Android Market.
