The NFL is preparing to let you watch the Super Bowl – streamed live to your mobile device – for the first time.
America's biggest sports spectacle, often watched by 90-100 million people every year, might now have an even bigger audience. The NFL has announced that the Super Bowl (Feb. 5) and a pair of wild-card playoff games broadcast by NBC (Jan. 7-8) will get the live streaming treatment from NFL.com and the NFL mobile app, as well as NBCSports.com. Verizon Wireless customers get a bonus: They'll be able to see an "NBC Postseason Extra" live stream, which gives viewers extra camera angles, highlights, interaction and more.
In case you're more a fan of the commercials than the game, those will be streamed as well in a "replay" package. An NFL spokesperson said she doesn't anticipate the mobile device being a primary screen for watching the big game; it's more complementary in nature, with all of the extras available.
NBC is no rookie in the live-streaming business. The network has been streaming its Sunday Night Football games for the past four years.
Last year's Super Bowl was watched by 111 million people.
