Cablevision Systems Corp. on Tuesday revealed it's seeking to block Verizon from making what it alleges are intentionally false and misleading claims in an advertising campaign over Cablevision's Internet service.

The Bethpage, N.Y.-based cable TV company announced filing a suit "seeking immediate relief in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York."

Cablevision claims Verizon is running the misleading ads over its Internet service across TV, radio, print, direct mail and its website.

"The FCC recently reported that Cablevision is delivering substantially faster Internet speeds than Verizon's ads claim they are," Cablevision asserted.

Responding to the lawsuit, Verizon spokesman Ed McFadden declared his company's ads are based on an FCC study "that found Cablevision provided customers on average just a bit more than half of the Internet speed it advertised during peak hours of Internet usage."

"Verizon will defend Cablevision's lawsuit vigorously to ensure that consumers continue to receive truthful information about Cablevision's misleading Internet speed claims," McFadden said.
