CNN, the news network that has brought viewers such varied personalities as Larry King and former New York governor Eliot Spitzer, is seeking to capitalize on consumers' growing appetite to access content on various devices.
The Time Warner-owned network is eyeing acquisitions that would push additional programming to tablets and smartphones and wants agreements that could help it exploit the growing consuming interest in viewing TV on multiple devices, Bloomberg reported, citing CNN President Jim Walton.
The catch-all phrase for the trend is known as TV Everywhere, and CNN is a believer. "As more tablets are sold and smartphones, it's only going to continue to grow," the 53-year-old Walton told Bloomberg in an interview.
Atlanta-based CNN announced in July that CNN and the HLN television networks are now streamed live on CNN.com as well as on the iPhone, iPad and iPod through its applications. At the time, the offerings were available to roughly 50 million homes that subscribe to TV providers, including AT&T, Comcast, Cox, DISH Network, Suddenlink and Verizon.
Walton told Bloomberg that CNN is examining companies that could help its expansion onto new devices and support its efforts to produce more content.
"We have long believed that our growth depends on keeping CNN essential and relevant to consumers wherever they are," he said in a statement over the summer.
