Skype's users now can access a Wi-Fi network in Manhattan thanks to an agreement the company reached with Towerstream Corp.
Towerstream and Skype have partnered to include Towerstream's Wi-Fi network within Skype's footprint of roughly 1 million wireless hotspots around the world.
Skype said its users can access the Manhattan network and its other Wi-Fi hotspots on smartphones or computers by paying by the minute using Skype Credit.
Skype's hotspots are available at such places as airports, cafes, hotels and train stations. Wi-Fi users pay for the time they are online rather than the amount they download, according to Skype, which is a division of Microsoft Corp.
