AT&T's Pantech Element: Bathtub Approved, Sort Of

It's a tablet PC that Ernie and his rubber ducky would approve.

Expect AT&T to officially unveil the Pantech Element, a tablet PC compatible with its nascent 4G LTE network, at next week's Consumer Electronics Show. The Element, which Boy Genius Report says comes packed with a 1.5 GHz, dual-core processor and 16GB of internal storage, runs on Android 3.2 (Honeycomb). But perhaps the most interesting spec of them all is AT&T's claim that it is "waterproof for real life." OK, so it can't really be submerged in a tub or a pool (technically, water resistant would be a better term; alas, perhaps we're being overly persnickety), but it sounds like this could be great for climates that get a lot of rain or for those with a tendency to be clumsy around water.

The Element reportedly has an 8-inch display, a 5MP camera on the back that shoots 1080p HD video, plus a 2MP lens on the front for video chat in 720p. Look for a price tag of $300, not bad for a tablet. Not as bargain-basement as the Kindle Fire, but still much less than an iPad.

The Element is expected to launch on Jan. 8.
