Is the annual Consumer Electronics Show losing some of its luster?

Just before Christmas, Microsoft announced that it would continue to participate, but that it will no longer offer a keynote address or maintain a booth after this year. The timing doesn't match up with the company's annual product releases.

Now comes word that Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam is cancelling his appearance on a panel discussing the power of innovation. The telco giant's boss cited a scheduling conflict that just came up. As of early Wednesday afternoon, McAdam was still featured as a panelist on the CES website.

There's little doubt that CES will still feature the unveiling of some of the hottest gadgets of the new year and draw more than 100,000 people to Las Vegas, but when some of the world's tech giants snub their nose at it, some of the shine starts to come off of the event.
