Motorola Mobility Holdings, Inc., the mobile-phone manufacturer that is being acquired by Google Inc. for $12.5 billion, on Friday announced that it shipped an estimated 10.5 million mobile devices in the fourth quarter, including 5.3 million smartphones.
The Libertyville, Ill.-based company, whose fourth-quarter results have yet to be finalized, estimates $3.4 billion in sales "with modest profitability" on a separate basis from generally accepted accounting principles.
Motorola Mobility said its results reflected an "increased competitive environment in the Mobile Device business and higher legal costs associated with ongoing Intellectual Property (IP) litigations."
The company will report its fourth-quarter results on Thursday, Jan. 26.
Motorola Mobility noted it still anticipates that Google's acquisition of the handset maker for $40.00 per share in cash will close in early 2012 subject to various closing conditions. "The Company reminds stockholders that it is possible that the failure to timely meet such conditions or other factors outside of the Company's control could delay or prevent completion of the transaction altogether," Motorola Mobility said.
