The U.S. Postal Service is continuing a long-standing relationship with Verizon Communications Inc. by entering into a six-year contract with the telecommunications company that is worth up to $186 million.

Under the contract, Verizon said it will continue to plan, design, install and manage a private, converged IP communications network based on multiprotocol label switching.

Verizon previously provided the Postal Service network services under a contract that was awarded in 1997. The New York-based telecom titan said it created one of the world's largest private networks for the Postal Service under that old agreement, and Verizon will continue to manage this network from its dedicated network operations center in Cary, N.C.
