With 111.3 million viewers, Super Bowl XLVI not only broke the record for most watched program in U.S. history, it broke records on social media platforms as well.

For the first time in history, the Super Bowl was streamed live online via Verizon Wireless, which could have favorably impacted the event's results, said a report by Rapid TV News.

Forty-one percent of all searches related to Super Bowl commercials made during the game were from mobile devices, with "Madonna" leading the pack of most popular search terms.

"Searches peaked at kickoff, and were made predominantly on desktop, followed by mobile phones and then tablets," according to a Google blog.

Facebook and Twitter were buzzing with Super Bowl updates.

Bluefin Labs, a social analytics company, reported that Super Bowl XLVI was the largest social TV event in history, beating out former champ, the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards, the report said.

There were more than 12,000 tweets per second during the final three minutes of the game and a total of 15 million tweets during the entire game, which is five times greater than last year.
