As the penetration level of U.S. wireless subscribers has neared saturation, new profitable customers are becoming more elusive to carriers. One lucrative and still-growing market is prepaid services.

According to Informa Telecoms & Media, prepaid services generated $241.9 billion in revenues for mobile network operators in 2007. The market for prepaid mobile services has continued to grow more than twice as fast as contract subscriptions, and the prepaid market will account for over 80 percent of new mobile subscriptions in the next four years.

Initially designed for the credit-challenged, prepaid services now cater to an expanding market including families, individuals, and businesses looking to control expenses. At the same time, record levels of worldwide immigration are creating flourishing natural customer segments for prepaid services. Prepaid offerings can also spur profitable growth in a down economy. How can global operators take advantage of the next phase in mobile subscriber acquisition? How will they win new, prepaid customers to increase their subscriber base and market share?

The ecosystem of prepaid services includes technology providers, service providers, and distributors/resellers. The evolution of network technology from conventional cellular networks to 3G, WiMax, LTE and other broadband services has created opportunities for IP-based prepaid services that offer higher margins than traditional calling cards. In addition, next-generation IMS networks have arrived, bringing with them the convergence of existing networks/services and new greenfield systems. Flexible charging mechanisms for multiple services has become a critical need for service providers looking to market new prepaid offerings, while technology providers need to gear up for a new architecture and new interfaces for prepaid deployments in IMS environments

Find out more in this webinar about how service providers can take advantage of the new prepaid opportunity, and meet the challenge of IP-based prepaid deployments.
